How We Research
Every guide on UnhurriedChoice starts with one question: will this product work for the person who is shopping for it? For our rice cooker guides, that means how much rice you cook, the kinds of rice you eat and the counter space you have.
Here is how we answer it.
1. We start with your rice and your kitchen
A cook for two needs less capacity than a family that eats rice every night. Brown, sushi and sticky rice can each want different settings.
We check the capacity in cups, the settings each cooker offers and the size of the machine. When your kitchen limits the choice, like a small counter or a low shelf, we say what to measure.
2. We compare specs and features
We look at the cooking technology (micom, neuro fuzzy or induction), the menu settings, the keep-warm function and the extras in the box. We also note the inner pot material the maker lists, such as nonstick, ceramic or stainless steel.
We note the warranty terms the maker lists too. When a detail comes from the maker, we say so.
3. We look at buyer feedback
We read through what buyers report after using a cooker. We look for patterns, like rice that sticks to the pot, displays that are hard to read, loud beeps or lids that are hard to clean.
One angry review doesn't sink a product. A pattern does.
4. We score each product
Our score weighs specs, features and buyer feedback against what you're shopping for. A product that's great for one buyer may score lower in a guide written for another.
Scores spread out on purpose. A 10 is rare.
5. We keep pages up to date
Products change, and some disappear from stores. Zojirushi and Cuckoo each sell several cookers with similar names and different sizes, so we check each model name and code before we write about it.
When we update a guide, the "Updated on" date at the top changes with it.
What our picks are not
Our picks are research, not lab tests. We don't claim to have cooked rice in every cooker we cover.
Our guides don't replace the maker's manual. For water lines, settings, cleaning and error codes, follow the maker's steps.
We make no health promises about any inner pot or coating. When a maker describes a pot as nonstick or free of a material, we label it as the maker's claim.
